In a major twist ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) is set to re-appoint Virat Kohli as captain. Kohli, who last led the franchise in 2021, had stepped down from the role after nearly a decade, citing the need for change. However, after talks with Shubman Gill about leading the team failed, RCB has turned back to their former leader to take charge once again.
A Second Stint for Kohli
Kohli’s first tenure as RCB captain spanned from 2013 to 2021. Although the franchise reached the playoffs multiple times under his leadership, they struggled to clinch an IPL title. In 2021, Kohli made the emotional decision to step down, promising to remain with the team as a player for the rest of his IPL career:
“I will continue to play for RCB until my last game in the IPL. It’s been a journey filled with joy, frustration, happiness, and sadness, and I am grateful for the fans’ unwavering support throughout.”
In the seasons that followed, Faf du Plessis captained the side from 2022 to 2024, but RCB’s quest for an IPL trophy remained elusive. With Kohli’s return, the franchise hopes to reignite its fortunes.
Failed Talks with Shubman Gill
According to reports, RCB initially approached Shubman Gill to take over the captaincy. However, Gill opted to remain with the Gujarat Titans, where he has become a core part of the team’s success. This led RCB to turn back to Kohli, banking on his experience and leadership as the team gears up for the 2025 season.
Kohli’s Shift in Leadership
While Kohli remains one of the most iconic figures in world cricket, he no longer holds any captaincy roles in international formats. He stepped down as India’s T20I captain after leading the team to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup, bringing an end to his era as skipper across all formats. His return as RCB captain marks a significant moment, as fans eagerly await his leadership in the upcoming season.
What Lies Ahead for RCB?
With Kohli back in the leadership role, it is expected that Faf du Plessis will not be retained by the franchise for the 2025 season. The decision to reappoint Kohli reflects RCB’s belief that the former captain can steer the team to long-awaited success.
As the IPL 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on Kohli’s leadership and whether RCB can finally lift the elusive IPL trophy.
